About The Bowmore Distillery

The oldest distillery on the isle of Islay and one of the oldest in the entire of Scotland, the doors of this distillery reportedly opened as far back as 1779. Established by a local merchant, John P.Simon , the distillery was then sold onto a family of german descent headed by James Mutter. Mutter had international farming interests, holding the position of vice Consul for the Ottoman Empire, Portugal and Brazil for a number of years. Mutter revolutionised whisky production through introducing processes such as using a small iron ship for the import of barley and coal from the mainland. A bottle of 1850 Bowmore Single Malt was sold at auction for £29,400 in 2007.

The distillery was bought from the Mutter family in 1925 by J.B. Sheriff & Co. and remained under their ownership until being purchased by Inverness-based William Grigor & Son, Ltd. in 1950.

Production of the whisky was halted during the second world war, with the distillery temporarily playing host to the RAF coastal command, many flying boats were deployed from the base of operations on anti-submarine warfare missions.

The distillery is currently owned by Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd, a holding company owned by Japanese drinks company Suntory. Morrison Bowmore also own the Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch distilleries and produce the McClelland’s Single Malt range of bottlings.

A fragrant, sweet and smoky hit to the senses. The moment this bottle is uncorked the peaty aromas synonymous with the island of Islay come out to play.

A round and utterly spicy dance on the palate. This whisky is as complex on the palate as it is on the nose. Salty undertones make their way through to the finish here.

Tasters are left with a long, aromatic, salty finish but more than anything a yearning for another sip of the peaty malt.
